When Should You Visit the Serengeti?
The Serengeti is spectacular year-round, but timing your visit can mean the difference between good and extraordinary. Each month offers unique wildlife experiences, from the calving season to dramatic river crossings.
January to March: Calving Season
The southern Serengeti comes alive as over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks. Predators are at their most active, making this prime time for dramatic wildlife photography. The short rains have passed, skies are clear, and the plains are lush green.
April to May: Green Season
The long rains bring fewer tourists and lower prices. The landscape is breathtakingly green, bird watching is exceptional with migratory species present, and you'll often have sightings to yourself. Many lodges offer significant discounts.
June to July: Migration Moves North
The massive herds begin their northward journey toward the Mara River. This is when the columns of wildebeest stretch to the horizon — a photographer's dream. The dry season begins, concentrating wildlife around water sources.
August to October: River Crossings
The most dramatic period. Millions of wildebeest and zebra must cross the crocodile-infested Mara and Grumeti rivers. These crossings are unpredictable and thrilling — nature at its most raw and powerful.
November to December: Short Rains Return
The herds begin moving south again. The short rains refresh the landscape, newborn animals appear, and the cycle prepares to begin again. Excellent value with fewer visitors.
Our Recommendation
For river crossings: July-October. For calving and predator action: January-February. For value and solitude: April-May or November. Every month in the Serengeti delivers unforgettable moments.
