Lake Natron is one of the most otherworldly landscapes in Tanzania -- a shallow, caustic soda lake in the remote north near the Kenyan border, so alkaline that it can calcify the bodies of animals that die in its waters, and so inhospitable that almost nothing lives in it except the flamingos it was practically made for.

What Makes It Different

The lake is the only regular breeding site in East Africa for lesser flamingos, and its otherwise hostile chemistry is precisely what protects their nests from predators. Rising from the plains nearby is Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano the Maasai call the "Mountain of God," which can be climbed overnight by determined trekkers. Nearby, the Ngare Sero waterfalls offer a welcome, cooler contrast for swimming after the heat of the flats.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from June to October offers the most reliable access, though flamingo numbers and lake conditions vary through the year depending on rainfall, so timing is best planned with local guidance.

Getting to Lake Natron

Lake Natron is remote even by Northern Circuit standards, reached by a long drive from Arusha or the Serengeti. Its isolation is exactly what makes it worthwhile for travelers seeking a genuinely different landscape from the classic savannah safari.
