About Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park, a vast and rugged wilderness on the Southern Circuit that still sees a fraction of the visitors of the northern parks. It sits at a meeting point between East and Southern African ecosystems, which gives it an unusual mix of wildlife and vegetation found together nowhere else in the country, from baobab-studded hills to the Great Ruaha River winding through the park's heart.

What You Will See

Ruaha holds some of Tanzania's largest elephant and buffalo herds, alongside one of East Africa's most important populations of African wild dog, an endangered species that has vanished from much of its former range. Lion prides here are notably large, and the park's remoteness means sightings often happen without another vehicle in view -- a genuinely different experience from the northern circuit's busier parks.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from June to October is prime time, when wildlife concentrates along the shrinking Great Ruaha River and surrounding waterholes, making for dramatic and predictable game viewing.

Getting to Ruaha National Park

Ruaha is typically reached by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam or Arusha, since road access from the north is long. Its remoteness is exactly what makes it worthwhile for travelers who have done a northern circuit safari before and want somewhere far less visited.

Good to Know

Because of the flight-based access and genuinely remote setting, Ruaha suits travelers with a little more time and budget who have already experienced the northern circuit and are looking for a distinctly different, far less crowded safari further south.

Because of the distance involved, Ruaha is best combined with other southern circuit parks such as Nyerere or Mikumi rather than the northern circuit, forming a dedicated southern Tanzania itinerary distinct from a Serengeti-Ngorongoro trip.
