About Zanzibar Island

Zanzibar is not simply a beach add-on to a safari -- it is a distinct archipelago with its own history, culture, and rhythm, semi-autonomous within Tanzania since the 1964 union. Centuries of trade brought Arab, Persian, Indian, and African influences together here, most visibly in the coral-stone architecture of Stone Town and in a cuisine built around the cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon that once made this the world's leading spice exporter.

What to Expect

The island's coastline varies significantly by region. The north around Nungwi has no tidal swing, so the sea is swimmable at any hour, and a lively resort scene. The east coast around Paje and Jambiani sees dramatic tides that expose sandbars and seaweed farms twice a day, alongside some of the best kitesurfing conditions in East Africa. Offshore, coral reefs around Mnemba Atoll and Pemba offer some of the Indian Ocean's best diving and snorkeling.

Best Time to Visit

Zanzibar follows its own seasonal pattern, distinct from the mainland safari calendar: the long rains fall from March to May, short rains arrive in November, and the driest, most popular months run from June to October and December to February.

Getting to Zanzibar Island

Zanzibar is a short flight from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, or directly from several international hubs, making it a natural extension after a mainland safari. Our Zanzibar packages can be combined with any safari itinerary.

Choosing Where to Stay

Where you base yourself matters more here than on most islands. The north offers nightlife and tide-free swimming at any hour, the east coast suits kitesurfers and travelers wanting quiet, and Stone Town puts history and restaurants on your doorstep. We help match the coast to what you actually want from your beach days, rather than a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Many travelers combine two or three nights in Stone Town with a longer beach stay elsewhere on the island, treating the city as a cultural bookend rather than the main event of the trip.
