Trekking in Tanzania

Tanzania is best known for its safaris, but the same country holds some of Africa's most rewarding high-altitude trekking. At the center of it is Mount Kilimanjaro, the continent's highest peak at 5,895 meters and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world -- a climb that requires no technical mountaineering skill, just fitness, patience, and the right acclimatization plan. Choosing a Route

Seven official routes climb Kilimanjaro, each with a different balance of scenery, crowd levels, and summit success rate. Machame is the most popular for its scenery and reliability, Lemosho offers a quieter approach through untouched forest, and Marangu is the only route with hut accommodation instead of tents. Longer itineraries of seven or eight days give your body more time to acclimatize and meaningfully improve your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak compared to a rushed five-day climb. Beyond Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is not the only mountain worth climbing here. Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest peak at 4,566 meters, is a still-active volcano inside Arusha National Park that makes an excellent acclimatization climb before a Kilimanjaro attempt, or a shorter multi-day trek in its own right. For those drawn to something more remote, Ol Doinyo Lengai -- the Maasai's "Mountain of God" near Lake Natron -- offers a demanding overnight ascent to an active crater rim.
