About Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is the collapsed cone of a volcano that was once, geologists estimate, as tall as Kilimanjaro. What remains is a caldera 610 meters deep and roughly 260 square kilometers across the floor -- a natural enclosure so complete that most of its resident wildlife never leaves. An estimated 25,000 large mammals live within its walls, giving the crater one of the highest concentrations of game anywhere in Africa.

Why the Crater Is Different from a Normal Game Drive

Because the crater walls act as a natural barrier, animals here do not migrate the way they do on the open Serengeti plains. That makes the crater one of the most reliable places in Tanzania to see the Big Five in a single day, including black rhino, which have become rare elsewhere. The crater floor also holds Lake Magadi, a shallow soda lake that regularly attracts flamingos by the thousand, and dense woodland at the Lerai Forest where elephant bulls are often seen.

What to Expect on a Visit

Access to the crater floor is strictly controlled -- vehicles descend by designated roads for day game drives only, and no camping is permitted inside. Most travelers stay in a lodge or camp on the crater rim and descend early to make the most of the cool morning light, when predator activity is highest.

Best Time to Visit

The crater's enclosed ecosystem means wildlife viewing is excellent year-round. The June to October dry season offers the easiest driving conditions, while visiting in the shoulder months means fewer vehicles competing for the same sightings.

Where to Stay

Lodges and camps line the crater rim rather than the floor itself, ranging from comfortable mid-range options to some of Tanzania's most exclusive luxury properties, several with views straight down into the caldera. Staying on the rim means a short, early descent for the best morning light, when predator activity and photography conditions are usually at their best.
