Mikumi is the most accessible of Tanzania's southern parks, reachable by paved road in around four hours from Dar es Salaam, which makes it a popular choice for travelers short on time. Its centerpiece is the Mkata floodplain, an open expanse of grassland ringed by mountains that is often compared to a miniature Serengeti for the way wildlife gathers across it in full view.

Lion, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, and elephant are all reliably seen on the Mkata plains, and Mikumi forms part of a larger conservation corridor connecting to Nyerere National Park to the south, allowing wildlife to move between the two.
