What to Expect

Like much of Zanzibar's east coast, Paje experiences dramatic tides that expose sandbars and seaweed farms twice daily, so swimming windows shift through the day. The village retains a laid-back, slightly bohemian character that has drawn a loyal following among surfers and long-stay travelers in particular.

Best Time to Visit

The kitesurfing season peaks from June to October and again from December to February, when trade winds are strongest and most consistent.

Getting to Paje

Paje sits about an hour from Stone Town on Zanzibar's east coast, easily combined with nearby Jambiani for travelers wanting a longer stretch of quieter beach.

Combine With: Paje pairs naturally with quieter Jambiani just down the coast for travelers who want both an active kitesurfing base and a calmer stretch of beach within the same trip.

More Than Kitesurfing

Even non-kitesurfers find plenty to do in Paje, from yoga retreats that have grown up around the village's laid-back reputation to simply enjoying one of Zanzibar's longest uninterrupted stretches of beach. The village's beach bars offer some of the most reliably good sunset views on the east coast.

Kite schools here cater to complete beginners as well as advanced riders, with multi-day courses widely available, making Paje a realistic place to learn the sport from scratch rather than just watch others ride.

Equipment rental and storage are widely available along the beach, making it easy to travel light and pick up gear locally rather than bringing your own.

Evening bonfires on the sand are a regular feature of the village's social scene, drawing both travelers and kite instructors together after the wind drops.
