About Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika is the world's second-deepest and second-largest freshwater lake by volume, stretching along Tanzania's western border and sharing its shores with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, and Zambia. Its water is famously clear, and it holds hundreds of cichlid fish species found nowhere else, many of them the ancestors of the colorful fish sold worldwide in the aquarium trade.

What to Expect

The lake's Tanzanian shore is the access point for both Gombe and Mahale Mountains National Parks, and beyond chimpanzee trekking, it offers genuinely excellent swimming and snorkeling in water so clear that visibility can extend many meters down. The scale of the lake, often described as feeling more like an inland sea, tends to surprise first-time visitors.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from late May to October offers the calmest water and easiest boat travel along the shoreline.

Getting to Lake Tanganyika

Kigoma is the main access point, reached by light aircraft, and serves as the launch point for boat trips to Gombe, Mahale, and along the lakeshore itself.

Combine With: The lake is the connecting thread for any western Tanzania itinerary, tying together Gombe, Mahale, and Kigoma into a single trip built around chimpanzee trekking and freshwater diving in one of Africa's most underrated regions.

An Inland Ocean

At over 670 kilometers long, Tanganyika is easy to mistake for open ocean from its shore, and its clarity means snorkelers can often see fish species found nowhere else on the planet without needing scuba equipment. The lake also plays a central role in the region's fishing economy, visible in the small dhows working its surface each morning.

The lake formed millions of years ago as part of the same rift valley system that shaped much of East Africa's dramatic geography, and its great depth is part of what has allowed such unique fish species to evolve in isolation.
