About Stone Town

Stone Town is the old heart of Zanzibar City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its narrow maze of alleys largely unchanged since it was East Africa's leading trading port. Walking through it means passing beneath elaborately carved wooden doors -- originally a status symbol among Omani and Indian merchant families -- and between buildings that blend Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European architectural styles in a way found nowhere else on the coast.

What to See

The House of Wonders and the Sultan's Palace recall Zanzibar's era as the seat of the Omani sultanate, while the former slave market site, now home to an Anglican cathedral and a sobering memorial, tells a darker chapter of the island's history as one of the Indian Ocean's largest slave trading posts. Freddie Mercury's childhood home has become an informal pilgrimage site for music fans, and each evening the Forodhani Gardens waterfront transforms into a night market of grilled seafood and Zanzibari street food.
