Empakaai is the lesser-known neighbor of the Ngorongoro Crater, a smaller volcanic caldera within the same Conservation Area whose steep, forested walls drop to a deep soda lake often tinted pink with feeding flamingos. Unlike Ngorongoro, there are no roads down to the crater floor -- reaching it means a guided hike of an hour or two each way.

What to Expect

The walk down passes through dense montane forest inhabited by blue monkeys and a wide range of birdlife before opening onto the crater floor and its lake. From the rim, clear days offer views across to the smoking cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai and, beyond it, the pale expanse of Lake Natron, making Empakaai a rewarding stop for travelers who want scenery and a walking safari rather than another vehicle game drive.

The dry season from June to October offers the easiest hiking conditions, though the crater is accessible year-round for those prepared for a wetter trail.

Getting to Empakaai Crater

Empakaai lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, usually visited on the way toward or from Lake Natron as a walking add-on to a Northern Circuit itinerary.
