Materuni Waterfalls

About Materuni Waterfalls

Materuni sits in the foothills of Kilimanjaro above Moshi, where a waterfall drops through lush Chagga farmland into a cool plunge pool -- a refreshing contrast to the heat of the plains below. The surrounding hillsides are covered in coffee, banana, and avocado plantations tended by the Chagga people, who have farmed these slopes for generations.

What to Expect

Most visits combine the waterfall hike with a traditional coffee tour, where local farmers demonstrate the full process from picking and roasting to grinding beans by hand, often finishing with a fresh cup brewed on the spot. It is a popular half-day trip that pairs cultural insight with a swim, requiring only moderate fitness.

Best Time to Visit

The waterfall flows year-round, though it is at its most dramatic shortly after the rains, roughly April to June and November to December.

Getting to Materuni Waterfalls

Materuni sits about 40 minutes from Moshi, making it an easy add-on either before a Kilimanjaro climb or during a safari based in the Arusha-Moshi area.

Combine With: Materuni is easily combined with nearby Chemka Hot Springs for a fuller day trip from Moshi, pairing a waterfall hike and coffee tour with a relaxing swim before returning to town.

Chagga Hospitality

The Chagga people who farm these slopes have a long tradition of welcoming visitors into their homes as part of the coffee tour experience, often including a simple home-cooked meal alongside the coffee demonstration. It is one of the more culturally immersive half-day trips available near Kilimanjaro.

Beyond the main falls, smaller cascades and swimming spots dot the same valley, and guides can tailor the hike to a shorter or longer route depending on the group's fitness and available time.

Sturdy footwear is recommended, since the trail can be slippery in places, particularly during and shortly after the rainy season months.
