About Olduvai Gorge
Olduvai Gorge -- often called the "Cradle of Mankind" -- is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world. Excavations led by Mary and Louis Leakey through the mid-20th century uncovered fossil evidence stretching back nearly two million years, including remains of Homo habilis and Paranthropus boisei, reshaping scientific understanding of human evolutionary origins.
What to Expect
A small on-site museum displays casts of key fossil and footprint discoveries and explains the gorge's geological layers, each representing a different era of early human history. Because Olduvai sits within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, directly on the route between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, most visitors stop for an hour or two as part of a longer game-drive transfer rather than visiting it as a standalone destination.
Best Time to Visit
The site is open year-round and works as a brief stop regardless of season, best timed to break up the drive between Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
Getting to Olduvai Gorge
Olduvai lies directly on the main road connecting Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, making it an easy and worthwhile addition to any Northern Circuit itinerary without requiring extra travel time.
Good to Know
Guides at the site can tailor the visit to your level of interest, from a brief overview on the way past to a more in-depth look at the excavation history and fossil discoveries, so it is worth letting your driver-guide know in advance how much time you would like to spend there.
Beyond the Homo habilis remains, the gorge has yielded stone tools and animal fossils, while the nearby Laetoli footprints, preserved in volcanic ash roughly 3.6 million years ago, are among the oldest evidence of upright walking ever found. The museum puts these discoveries in context before you continue on toward the Serengeti.
